About Sandra R Schulze Photography

Sandra R Schulze Photography Are you someone who just can't specialize in anything? And yet, you have to make a living? Then we are cut from the same cloth. For my day job, I'm a scientist, a biologist, a geneticist who works with fruit flies to work out esoteric things like how genes are packaged in the cell, or what the genetic basis of aging might be. It's a great job, and I've wanted to be a scientist since I was a child, but I also wanted to be an artist. Both. And a musician. All three. Music was my life for a while; I sang. Nowadays, I hit top C's to bring the class to order. But once the work is done (sort of) I'm out in the garden, weeding, pruning, mowing, foraging, and dumping the materials I find on a flat bed scanner. Scanners have tremendous resolution, much higher than any of my cameras, though a pretty shallow depth of focus. I have to build the image from behind, and only see the work develop as I take many preview scans. The result against a black background is enormously satisfying to me. I can emulate my heroes and heroines of the Dutch Golden Age of floral art (Seventeenth Century) and I can whisper the last sentence from Darwin's Origin of Species: "There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved."
